Creative Briefs + Other Materials

In my experience with teaching introductory level design classes as well as more advanced classes, I have seen a significant gap in the ability of many students during critiques to express clearly what qualities and strengths a particular work has. Based on these observations I have developed two documents for improving how one can improve their ability to speak about design. In the first week students are given an overview of the fundamentals of art and the principles of design, and are directed to observe where they see the topics at work. Before the first class critique, students are given the first pdf for critique and evaluation, and the other pdf is given later in the semester. This allows for reinforcing their understanding of fundamentals and principles—as students are directed to use those terms for evaluating work. This also reinforces their ability to speak about work without defaulting to “I like it” without any deeper descriptions.
